FAQ
Common questions about RandomPlayer.
RandomPlayer supports MP4, MOV, M4V, and most H.264/H.265 content natively. MKV and WebM files are automatically remuxed to MP4 on-the-fly using a built-in pure Swift remuxer—no transcoding or quality loss. This includes support for B-frame video, FLAC audio, and multi-track containers.
Any NAS, computer, or device running an SMB/CIFS file share will work. This includes Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, Windows shares, macOS file sharing, and even Raspberry Pi running Samba.
RandomPlayer connects to SMB shares on your local network. For remote access, you'll need a VPN or other network solution that makes your server accessible. The app doesn't provide remote access itself.
You can pin videos for offline viewing. The app uses an LRU (Least Recently Used) cache strategy—frequently watched content stays cached, while old files are automatically cleaned up when you need space.
Yes! Watch history and resume positions sync via iCloud. Start a video on your iPhone, resume on Apple TV, and pick up exactly where you left off on your Mac.
Absolutely. Create multiple share profiles with different credentials. Each profile maintains its own playlist and watch history, making it easy to switch between libraries.
RandomPlayer supports embedded subtitles in video files. External SRT/VTT files in the same directory as the video will be detected and offered as subtitle tracks.
RandomPlayer is a one-time purchase with no subscriptions or in-app purchases. All features are included.
RandomPlayer requires iOS 26.0 or later, iPadOS 26.0 or later, tvOS 26.0 or later, or macOS 15.0 or later. It's built with the latest Swift and takes advantage of modern platform features.
